Influencer marketing, a fusion of old and new marketing tools has taken Sri Lanka by storm as of late. Colombo’s influencers take the idea of an endorsement and position it within a modern-day content driven marketing campaign to push the message of the brands  which they work with. So contrary to popular belief, this is a real-world career which involves organizational skills, strategic planning and copious amounts of research. Most importantly, influencers must have strong interpersonal skills. After all, they are people talking to people, not companies talking to companies.

She loves traveling solo and does most things alone as to her, there is something beautiful and calm about the whole process of enjoying one’s own company. You’d most likely find Zainab around Colombo at a coffee shop, sipping iced tea with her eyes on her phone; Zainab’s phone is where the magic happens. She remarks that most people assume she isn’t exactly a friendly person, but she reassures us that it is only because she doesn’t smile often!

What kind of content do you produce?

I started out with just food, but I’ve ventured into fashion, lifestyle and travel blogging. Every day, I seek out inspiration to do fresh and creative content to keep my audience engaged!

Does being an influencer ever get annoying?

What annoys me is that the majority of the public don’t realize the artistic and creative effort put into each post. Contrary to popular belief, this is a time-consuming profession that’s highly demanding.

“Influencers are Entrepreneurs” – What do you make of this statement?

I didn’t really think of this statement until recently. I realized that as an influencer, you are a brand. You market yourself to create content for multiple other clients and brands across your platforms to produce engagement and reach. We’re self-made and we start out by creating fresh content every day at first before we get recognized and reached out to work on serious projects. I still think there’s a long way to go but I respect all upcoming startups and entrepreneurs. I would say that the one thing in common we both have is that the hustle never stops!

What is the best thing about being an influencer?

Truthfully, I never looked at myself as a person of influence. Over the years, I just wanted to share experiences from my life so that I could reach out and maybe befriend someone who needed me. Nothing compares to the feeling of conversing with someone who has been through what you are currently going through! It is extremely rewarding when you assist in opening someone’s mind to unfamiliar things, especially when it comes to helping those in need.

Any thoughts on collaborations with other influencers?

I personally have not done any collaborations with other influencers, but I find the fusion really interesting when such collaborations happen.

What kind of content do you produce?

The content I produce is mostly music related. Most of my hard work goes into creating music and making videos. Aside from that, I like to post content that mirrors bits and pieces of my lifestyle and the kind of person I am. Even when collaborating with different brands and companies, I like to keep the content genuine by endorsing products and services that I can personally relate to.

What is the best thing about being an influencer?

It has given me the opportunity to work on my own terms and pursue my creative freedom. Being an Influencer has opened up an avenue for me to give back to those who want to learn and grow. Social media has become a platform where I can inspire and empower others to bring out their hidden talents and skills.

In this era, Influencers are considered to be the new age celebrities. In that sense, it makes us entrepreneurs as we go on to build our own brands or businesses by harnessing the power of social media. With digital fame, influencers are capable of reaching out to a large, more refined audience in order to influence their lifestyles.
