An Inspirational Story of a Visionary Leader - Sujith Samaradiwakara
From being a Sales Representative to Sri Lanka’s leading healthcare solutions provider, an outstanding vision made a reality by the Founder and Chairman of Technomedics International.
After his school days in Mahanama College and Royal College Colombo, Sujith Samaradiwakara started his career as a sales representative for PepsiCo, GSK, and Hemas Pharmaceuticals and later headed the Medical equipment division at Ceylon Oxygen. With the experience he gathered, Mr. Samaradiwakara wanted to start his venture. His knowledge in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and biomedical industries paved the way to start Technomedics International in 1996 with three employees. Today, Technomedics International is the leading healthcare solutions provider in Sri Lanka with the broadest spectrum of product portfolio, specialized in clinical specialties. It supplies up to 90% of the devices and equipment needs of a health care provider.
Leaving the Corporate world to achieve big!
Mr. Samaradiwakara was inspired by his father’s hard work, an accountant by profession, and ran a grocery shop and motor spare part shop, all while taking care of the family. Idolizing him, Mr. Samaradiwakara always thrived to achieve more in his corporate life. He did not expect himself to give up his career at the age of 28. Most wouldn’t dare to do this. However, he could not shake the feeling of wanting to do bigger and better and did not ever look back after leaving his job. At first, he did not have many plans, and the journey was quite challenging but thrilling, each day a highlight.
The biggest challenge he faced was access to capital. Still, with the constant support and enduring nature of his partners, his dear friend & partner Kapila Geeganage, and a team of partner employees, he could steer the organization to the great success it is today. There is the woman behind every successful man, and there is no difference here. His beloved wife, Sheromi Samaradiwakara, has always been a key pillar in his success right through his personal life and as a business partner.
Grooming for Perfection!
At Technomedics, employees are groomed to face any challenge and adapt to any role. Mr. Samaradiwakara has delegated most operational decisions to the senior management and mainly focuses on networking, identifying new technology, and research. Bringing new technology into the Country & making healthcare affordable are clearly his priorities.
In 1996 when Technomedics was founded, the challenge was to acquire the right talent, which was the key to build a professional organization. Therefore, Technomedics took the task of developing professionals into their shoulders and converted themselves into a knowledge hub and a training institute. With the pool of knowledge & expertise today, Technomedics is a University of their own in the Biomedical field. Employees were trained and skilled to perfection at Technomedics, and Mr. Samaradiwakara proudly mentions how his past employees are now working at high ranks in well-known local companies.
“We’re looking at diversifying into various segments in the medical equipment and solutions market. Partnering up with the internationally renowned brand, Flexicare -UK, who has invested in setting up a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Horana, Bandaragama, to manufacture disposable medical devices, first of its kind in Sri Lanka. The products manufactured at Flexicare, Sri Lanka, are exported globally, making Sri Lanka proud.
The world is rapidly moving towards automation & advance technology, and the medical industry is no different. Technomedics, under the leadership of Mr. Samaradiwakara, is continuously researching and identifying the latest technologies used in the medical industry. Observing the market trends and forecasting future demand, Technomedics will continue to introduce new technology & continue its mission of “Saving Lives through Innovative Technology.”
Planning the future!
“We want to keep looking at investment opportunities and grow beyond. We explore strategic partnerships and new opportunities.
My passion is to learn about new technologies, and I love to see the world. Traveling & exploring the world has helped me to achieve both my business and personal aspirations. Being too busy with work, I have missed the opportunity to isolate myself from business and experience adventure, but I hope to do so in the future.”
As a person who rose from ground zero, Mr. Samaradiwakara’s advice to the youngsters in the country is to focus on their goals, and not be lost in the process. “If you do what you love to do, you will be unstoppable. Learn your strengths, study your competition & your market, gather ample information, and research before you make a move.” He encourages the young entrepreneurs to dive deep into society, observe its patterns, and be mindful of every decision they make.
