Be realistic. No one can work continuously for 9-10 hours straight. We all need breaks. Make sure to account for adequate breaks when planning your day. However, be mindful not to give yourself massive breaks. This can disengage you from work and result in procrastination.

You can use the 90/20 rule for taking breaks. This is the concept where you spend 90 minutes focused on a specific task and then take a 20-minute break. Studies show that the brain uses up most of its glucose (the sugar responsible for optimal brain function) in 60 to 90-minute intervals (Youtern, 2015). Taking a break by detaching yourself from work. This may include grabbing a bite, taking a walk, or meditating. This gives the brain enough time to rebuild its stores of glucose and therefore prepares you for the next 90 minutes of work. Using this rule can significantly improve your productivity, creativity and reduce stress levels.

 

  1. Focus on one task at a time

You can’t focus on multiple tasks simultaneously. Although multitasking is an ability, most individuals possess and is perceived as an effective strategy. However, that is not the case. Individuals who focus on one task at a time are much faster and more significant in quality than those who multitask. In addition to that, spending time on one study at a time can help you avoid distractions and focus entirely on accomplishing the task effectively.

You can use apps like Forest, Any Do List, Focus Model on smartphones, and other productivity tools that help individuals detach from distractions and focus on one task at a time.



  1. Celebrate wins!

When you finish a task or notice that your productivity and time management has improved by using some of these techniques or other techniques that work best for you. It’s important to reinforce this win with a reward. This is a way of celebrating your victory and success because you worked hard to accomplish that task. The enjoyable reward would reduce your stress levels. It also influences your intrinsic motivation (self-motivation) to continue developing your time-management skills and other areas to improve productivity.

 

  1. Invest smart!

Time is the biggest asset and blessing of every individual. Employees trade their time, skill, and effort in exchange for monetary compensation. Likewise, every individual spends time on tasks that benefit them in some way. Therefore, you must learn to identify the tasks you need to take and those you should avoid. Taking on too much work that doesn’t pay off is not worth the effort. That time could be spent on something much more worthwhile.
